Event details
This show - entitled ‘Psychological Material’ - pays homage to Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis. The exhibition is composed of two complimentary sets of works: the ‘Portraits’ and the ‘Body’ series. Together they explore emotion, instinct and the unconscious. Each ‘Portrait’ is named after a particular Freudian psychoanalytical concept. Here Roland depicts a model from life, in a single pose, which represents a re-enactment of the analyst/patient interaction. The ‘Body’ series was made in a group drawing session, where the models posed for timed periods, from short to long. Roland’s interest lay in capturing instantly the essence of one person’s presence, through their body. The ‘Body’ series is an allusion to Freud’s psychoanalytical approach to sexuality. Roland’s art is based on the premise that what we see is only a partial depiction of what is out there. For Roland, making portraits, life drawings and paintings is a means to access the depth of human nature, through expressive studies of one’s presence, feelings, thoughts and body. To achieve this, he always works in a very spontaneous and instinctive way. Roland Kassar (born 1986) is a London-based artist who works from direct observation. Since 2018, Roland is resident artist at Store Street Espresso. Currently he is studying psychoanalysis and previously read philosophy, both of which influence his life and art Wine, Beer and Soft Drinks will be provided for free.
