For those who don't know or have not experienced it, every August 1st in Warsaw people go out onto the street at 5 pm for 2 minutes of silence to commemorate the anniversary of the start of the Warsaw uprising in 1944 (this year is the 80th). For those who can, the best place to experience this is in the centre where much of the city gathers, release flares and stand together as the sirens ring. I don't necessarily suggest meeting for it but if you have the opportunity to be in the city centre at 17.00, it's a touching emotional moment shared with the rest of the city and something you don't really get to experience anywhere else in Europe (unless the football team wins a match) and only happens once a year.
