As an opening for “Meet the Artist” monthly series we will join Saatchi curated artist Melissa Topal in her studio. Melissa Vipritskaya Topal is an abstract artist based in London. She began working with painting and illustration where she was depicting people's emotions and exploring the phenomenon of the crowd, but her curiosity and experimentation with material, colour and form during her studies at Central Saint Martins switched her interest into sculpture. With the latter, she is exploring how single-surface works like paintings and drawings can become three-dimensional pieces. She fluctuates between calculation and unpredictability and often allows material to shift the course of her process. Her favourite medium is the sustainable and environmentally friendly MDF because it can easily absorb the required shape, as well as metal, because she likes to admire the sparks when cutting the sheets. In her current practice, she seeks to express the dynamism, noise, speed and chaos inherent in big cities. Tower Bridge Engine Rooms and mechanical tools inspired her to depict these details in her sculptures and paintings. Urban nature plays an important role in her recent works where she seeks to heighten awareness of environmental elements and urban imagery, and invites the viewer to witness the intricacies as well as the beauty of the world orbiting around us. Her pieces are widely exhibited across the UK, she is organising group exhibitions in collaboration with other artists and curators. As well she organised an curated many exhibitions in London!
