Our invited guest speaker, Dr. Arthur Bražinskas (AI scientist @ Google; Ph.D in AI), will talk about the interplay between Western science and Eastern spirituality. He will discuss our understanding of consciousness from two different angles: artificial intelligence and Samkhya philosophy. Recently, we have witnessed incredible advances in AI in all domains of society. The AI systems are powered by deep neural networks. While these networks mimic the architecture of the brain, do they tell us anything about consciousness? Arguably, consciousness is what distinguishes humans from other living creatures. To shed light on this question, we will look at it from the second angle — Samkhya philosophy. Samkhya is one of the oldest and most influential schools in Hindu philosophy, with two principle ideas: conciseness (Purusha; true observing self) and matter (Prakriti). This dualistic system describes human experience as an interplay between consciousness and matter (body, mind, ego, intellect). Bio Dr. Arthur Bražinskas is an AI scientist@Google. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Ph.D in AI: language technology and Bayesian machine learning. Before that, he completed an MSc (honors) in AI at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Besides his scientific interests, Arthur is a mediation practitioner with more than ten years of experience. He has been studying Tibetan Tantric Buddhism in the traditional Kaguya lineage. Also, he has been taught raja yoga and Samkhya philosophy by a renowned yoga Guru. His interests are in the interplay of philosophy, spirituality, and scientific methods.
